Hogs Back Logs
part of a family run business established in 1981
Hogs Back Logs is a family run business, which Ray started in 2005 under ‘Anglesey Farm Logs’, in order to diversify his agricultural business, R J Simmons Agricultural Services Ltd, which he started in 1981. At certain times of the year the work is done and the logs business compliments the farming.
Since October 2019 his son Ryan has been given the responsibility of running this part of the business but Ray is still advising and delivering logs.
From our store, to your door
The hardwood is locally source from Forestry Commission, which means that every tree purposely harvested for firewood, with another replanted to replace it. The timber is transported to our yard and is kept in large stacks. The wood is then put on to our firewood processor, which is where it is cut to the desired 8-10 inch length and split on site (firewood processing), before then being stored in our barn. By using barn storage, the logs are naturally dried by adequate ventilation flowing through to achieve the optimum moisture content of around 20%, which is perfect for you to burn. As wood dries, the bark begins to crack and fall off, creating a dust like any other dry object, so how do we eliminate this? Before we load up for a delivery, the logs are tipped into a ‘log cleaner’ which separates any loose wood and shakes any dust off the logs before going into our trailer.
We have been around for a long time! If you are interested to see what we do on the farm, then have a look at our agricultural website; www.rjsagri.co.uk
